A closer look at Washington’s wine regions

What’s so special about Washington wine? It’s all about the “terroir.”

Many people think terroir means the type of soil that wine grapes are grown in, but the word means much more than that. It describes the natural environment in which wine grapes are grown, including factors such as soil, topography, and climate.

In this section, you will learn all about each of Washington’s 14 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). When you are finished reading these in-depth articles, you will come away with two conclusions: You will understand why the “terroir” in Washington State provides perfect growing conditions for award-winning wine, and you will have a better understanding as to how incredibly beautiful the State of Washington is.

In this section you will also read about regions in the state where wineries have become an important economic force. So, make sure to read the articles about Woodinville Wine Country, the Tri-Cities of Southeastern Washington, the wineries of the North Cascades, the growing wine scene in Spokane and the hundreds of wineries that now dot the landscape in Western Washington from Bellingham, WA to Vancouver, WA (see article about the Puget Sound AVA).
