SMAK Wines opens tasting room at Walla Walla Airport
Winemaker Fiona Mak makes nothing but Rosé…all day, every day, 360 days a year.
Rosé all day? No, Rosé all year! SMAK Wines, the premier woman owned, rosé-exclusive winery in Walla Walla, WA.,opened for its first vintage this past February. Featuring a unique concept that marries rosé with seasonality, you no longer need to drink the same bottle of rosé all year!
Owner and winemaker Fiona Mak was a restaurant manager and Sommelier in New York City before landing in Walla Walla, where she earned her degree in Enology and Viticulture at Walla Walla Community College. She dreamt up the concept while vacationing in the French Riviera, where rosé was part of the lifestyle, and realized that rosé was more than just a beverage. She used her extensive background to create a special experience for her guests.
SMAK Wines offers three Rosés from the 2018 vintage – Spring Rosé of Sangiovese ($16), Summer Rosé of Pinot Gris ($16), both made from pressing juice directly into stainless steel tanks to show a true expression of the fruit. The winery’s Fall/ Winter Rosé ($19) is a blend of Syrah, Mouvèdre and Counoise, aged and vinified in neutral barrels before bottling. These Rosés are distinctively different, each with its own profile and pairing suggestions, and are well suited for an all-year consumption.
Located in the Walla Walla airport district, SMAK Wines is a part of the incubator wine-making program established by the Port of Walla Walla. SMAK Wines Piper Avenue tasting room may never be the same each time you visit. As the seasons change, so do the décor and layout. The current Summer tasting room décor includes a private beach in the back, modeled after one of Fiona’s favorite beaches in the French Riviera, Le Beau Rivage. Summer tasting room hours are Thursday to Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
SMAK Wines is located at 594 Piper Ave., Walla Walla, WA 99362. To learn more about the winery, visit: www.smakwines.com. Or call Fiona at (509) 629-9643.
